  29.   Description:
  30.     Abstract:
  31.       The data set for this coverage includes arcs, polygons, and
  32.       polygon labels that outline and describe the general geologic
  33.       age and type of bedrock of the Former Soviet Union and selected
  34.       adjacent areas.  It also includes shoreline and inland water
  35.       bodies.
  36.     Purpose:
  37.       Although a geologic map displays the geographic distribution of
  38.       the different geologic units and rock types for numerous purposes,
  39.       this data set is compiled primarily for the World Energy Project
  40.       as part of a required strategic base for assessing the petroleum
  41.       potential of this region.  For this purpose, the map basically
  42.       provides an outline of the general geographic distribution of
  43.       both known or hypothetical petroleum-potential formations and
  44.       units, i.e., sedimentary rocks and basins, and areas containing
  45.       igneous and metamorphic rocks which have virtually little or no
  46.       potential.  The map is also compiled, in part, to provide a basis
  47.       for outlining the geographic and petroleum provinces of coverage
  48.       PROV1.  This basic geologic data set, combined with
  49.       others, such as tectonic and burial histories, distribution of
  50.       known oil and gas fields, distribution and quality of reservoir
  51.       rocks, organic geochemistry, etc., will ultimately define the
  52.       basis for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas in the
  53.       Former Soviet Union.
  54.     Supplemental_Information:
  55.       Procedures_Used:
  56.       Scanning original paper maps on large format Anatech Eagle
  57.       scanner.  There is one copy for each of two sheets - gray scale
  58.       (after original map scanning).
  59.       Images are in TIFF format at 200 dot/inch resolution.
  60.       The images then transformed to Equidistant Conic Projection
  61.       by ARC/INFO GRIDWARP program (polynomial of the second order).
  62.       The "from-to" links for transformation are created by ARC/INFO
  63.       CONTROLPOINTS program where latitude/longitude grid (point
  64.       coverage) with cell size 6X4 degrees is used as a reference.
  65.       Georeferenced gray scale images from the first step are vectorized
  66.       by the method of extraction linear features described by F. Persits,
  67.       1997, (USGS open-file report OF-97-713), and then corrected by
  68.       hands-on digitizing.
  69.       After the vectorizing is completed, a series of piecewise "rubbersheet"
  70.       transformations are applied to the ARC/INFO coverages created
  71.       The ARC/INFO coverages used as reference for transformation
  72.       are ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3 million GIS cartographic layers (RIV3M, CTRY3M).
  73.       To perform rubber transformation the combination of ARC/INFO
  74.       ARCEDIT (add links) and ADJUST programs are applied.
  75.       There are a number of such transformations for every limited
  76.       area on original coverage.
  77.       The geology attribute data are
  78.       assigned using standardized geologic symbols for the World Energy
  79.       project.  Although all polygons from the source maps are in-
  80.       cluded in the data, geology was simplified from its original
  81.       version, and attributed only by overall age; no technical
  82.       division was made of geologic ages into upper, lower, early,
  83.       late, etc., nor were geologic units differentiated within any
  84.       particular geologic age or region as they appear on the source
  85.       maps.  This is particularily true for Precambrian units.
  86.       ESRI's ArcInfo GIS system is used for cleaning and attributing.
  87.       Topology is created.  Some attributes are combined and some
  88.       polygons generalized.
  89.       Reviews_Applied_to_Data:
  90.       Attributes and contacts are verified via visual editing and review.
  91.       A minimum of two reviewers examine and compare digital versions
  92.       versus orignal material.
  93.       A comparison between color plot and original paper map was
  94.       carried out by visual comparison.  Color plots in 1:7,500,000
  95.       scale were superimposed on each of corresponding original
  96.       map sheets.  All errors detected in attributes were corrected.

  197.       Overall accuracy is based on accuracy of general geology coverage.
  198.       Since all the attributes are of character type, only
  199.       correctness of polygon labelling can be provided (see below).
  200.     Quantitative_Attribute_Accuracy_Assessment:
  201.       Attribute_Accuracy_Value:
  202.         Standard ARC/INFO attributes accuracy in Feature Attributes
  203.         Tables like AREA, PERIMETER, etc. depend on horizontal positional
  204.         accuracy.
  205.         All the additional attributes are character type.
  206.       Attribute_Accuracy_Explanation:
  207.         All the Attributes besides standard ARC/INFO atttibutes are
  208.         of character type.
  209.         Standard verification of attributes reliability has been done by
  210.         ARC/INFO EDITPLOT program to find polygons without assigned
  211.         character value or with more than one value.
  212.   Logical_Consistency_Report: Polygon topology present.

  214.   Positional_Accuracy:
  215.     Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
  216.       Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
  217.         1. Original geological maps are of 750 meter maximum accuracy
  218.         (0.1 mm on paper map of 1:7,500,000 scale)
  219.         2. Scanned images are of 200 dot/inch resolution
  220.         (0.1 mm on paper).  That is why fuzzy tolerance for CLEAN
  221.         programm in ARC/INFO is set to 1500 m (two pixels).
  222.         3. Several steps are taken to vectorize scanned images.
  223.         The projection and coordinate system for the original map
  224.         are not given. Therefore it is necessary to georeference
  225.         the map to real world coordinates. This is done as follows:
  226.         3.1. The latitude/longitude graticule with cell size 4 * 6 degree
  227.         is projected to Equidistant Conic projection and then used to
  228.         create ARC/INFO point coverage.  That point coverage is used
  229.         to create "to - from" links by ARC/INFO CONTROLPOINTS program.
  230.         3.2  A gray-scale scanned image of the original paper map is
  231.         transformed to Equidistant Conic projection by ARC/INFO GRIDWARP
  232.         program (polynomial of the second order) using the "to - from"
  233.         links created by CONTROLPOINTS program.
  234.         3.3  The scanned image from the second step is vectorized by
  235.         the method of extraction of linear features described by F.Persits,
  236.         1997, (USGS open-file report OF-97-713), and then corrected by
  237.         hands-on digitization.
  238.         3.4  A series of piecewise "rubbersheet" transformations are
  239.         applied to the final ARC/INFO coverage.  The ARC/INFO coverages
  240.         that are used for transformation were ESRI's ArcWorld 1:3 million GIS
  241.         cartographic layers.
  242.         Overall position error is estimated with a randomly selected set
  243.         of locations on the ESRI coverages and comparing the same locations on
  244.         the final geology coverage (geo1).  RMS error is 4.8 km (0.64 mm
  245.         of the original paper map) with maximum error about 12 km (1.6 mm
  246.         on original paper map).

  248.         Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Value: 4800 meters
